Bellydance, Boone!

                                   Frequently Asked Questions

ABOUT CLASSES:
  • Do you have to show your belly?

It's not required that you show your belly in class (though it is called "belly dance" for a reason).  Some dancers find it helpful to wear cropped tops or sports bras to class so they can see if they are doing the movements correctly. Especially when practicing belly rolls, it may be helpful to see your belly.

  •  Am I too old?  young?  large?  small?

  NO!  Anyone can bellydance.

Belly dance is probably the oldest dance on the planet.  In many cultures it was a dance performed for women, by women.  This dance did not originate as dance to gain the attentions of a man.

Traditionally belly dance was danced by women to entertain themselves. Remember this was long before the age of television and radio!  Girls would learn to dance by watching their aunties, grandmothers and older sisters.

Some people believe women danced to show other women how to give birth - a very possible theory!  Women came together to dance in celebration of harvests, marriages, coming-of-age or childbirth.  And yes, sometimes men joined in and danced, too!

  • What should I expect in my first bellydance class?
A beginner class is designed to introduce you to basic bellydance movements.  Classes usually begin with a warm-up and then work on learning isolations necessary for bellydance.  The beginner class will allow you to join a choreography or tribal class and feel familiar with the movements.

  • What about performing?  Can I?
Occasionally students do have the opportunity to perform.  Past gigs have included everything from hafla's to ASU's Diversity Celebration, the Day of Dance at Watauga Hospital, as well as festivals, fund-raising & charity events.  You will never be required to perform, but sometimes performing is an option.  It's fun to be able to show friends and family what you've learned!  I'm asked so many questions about performing that I've created a page just to prepare for gigs:   preparing for performances

ABOUT PERFORMANCES:

  • How long does a performance last?
This really depends on the gig.  Sometimes we have "teaching gigs" where we will dance a short set and then demonstrate some movements for the audience to learn.  When performing on stage we often have a 15 - 30 minute time slot to fill.  But on festival occasions we typically dance at our tent.  We'll perform one dance at a time and spread performances out over the entire day.

  • How do I book bellydancers for a gig?
Use the form on the "Contact Us" page.  Let us know what you're looking for and we will get back in touch!
