Bellydance came to Boone in the fall of 2004 when Dr. Maya moved into the area to teach at ASU. The following summer she moved away, but left us with a growing love for this dance form.
A year later, another teacher came up the mountain and started a new session of belly dance classes. Eventually, Joharah, one of her students, took over teaching in hopes of recruiting dancers and musicians to grow a belly dance community.
In the fall of 2008 Annie began classes in Ashe County. And in the spring of 2009 Sephira started classes in Boone! Bellydance has spread into West Jefferson and Wilkes County. Bellydancers in the High Country find ourselves performing for local fundraisers, street festivals and other events.
We look forward to meeting dancers: new to belly dance or experienced! Classes are offered in Boone and West Jefferson. And we are always on the lookout for musicians who are interested in playing Middle Eastern music.
